It's now URGENT

Cut emissions or not? It won't stop global warming and the tipping point is, at best a few short years away. We have to take out of the air, the past fifty year accumulation of carbon dioxide.

We must sequester this excess into our agricultural soils. Nothing else has even a remote chance of working. That gets the air back to normal, and the heating stops. The Earth's average temperature quickly returns to normal. We pay our farmers $20 a ton of CO2 sequestered into stable humus and soil organic matter. And let them work out the best way of making their money. If they can do it, then, and only then do they get paid.

Big stable agricultural countries are the key. Australia is bigger than India. So is Canada.

If that doesn't work, We're Stuffed. If all the ice on land melts, and that's on the cards, then sea levels will rise 75 metres. That's 250 feet. Just one metre, three feet, and that along with all these strange new "freak" weather events will kill millions of us and cost billions.

Simultaneously we start the switch to non fossil carbon energy systems. If that takes twenty years, that's okay, just so long as it happens, so the levels can't go back up all over again.

Because the soil fix can only be used once.

Yeomans' Soil Carbon Solution May 2010

It is feasible and practical to stop global warming right now. We remove the excess carbon dioxide that's causing the problem and we totally halt climate change. And we do it with soil.

Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the blanket that sets the average temperature of our Earth's biosphere. It is now too thick and the biosphere is overheating. Merely decreasing the rate at which we continue to thicken the blanket is of little value. It's just academic. It'll just get hotter. Less light globes and smaller cars and trying somehow to lower emissions in an increasingly affluent world, just won't work.

Even a huge reduction in our rate of using fossil carbon fuels cannot stop constant, progressive, endless, global temperature rises. But we can take what's there out.

The air is overloaded with carbon dioxide, simple calculations show that there are, today 660 billion tonnes more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than before human beings ever existed on this planet, and back even beyond that for at least a million years. We put all that extra there in less than one hundred years.

At $10 per tonne for carbon dioxide the bill to totally eliminate the Earth's global warming problem is therefore $6,600 billion. And the problem is gone.

It has become glaringly obvious that our only hope to remove the accumulated excess greenhouse gasses is by the efficient and economical sequestration of carbon dioxide into agricultural soil. We convert the carbon in atmospheric carbon dioxide, into carbon in soil humus. And humus is the material that makes poor soils fertile. Strong agricultural chemicals hinder the rapid formation of fertile soil. You can see a simplified explanation of how soil carbon sequestration works at – Climate Change Terminated 2 http://www.youtube.com/user/AllanYeomans1

Each nation in the world pays approximately 1% of its GDP(Gross Domestic Product), for ten years to their farmers to significantly improve the health and fertility and productivity of the nation's soils. And global warming ends. Because a nation's historic responsibility for causing global warming correlates closely to its GDP the 1% figure is surprisingly consistent for all countries.

The recent report by Sir Nicholas Stern, who headed Britain's Government Economic Service and formerly served as the World Bank's chief economist, tells us very clearly that the consequences of global warming could cost between 5% and 20% of the world's gross domestic product (GDP), annually. That's a bill for between $1,200 billion and $4,800 billion annually for the next hundred years.

So 1% for ten years to halt global warming has to be economic common sense.

The US based Natural Resources Defense Council, the NRDC estimates global warming costs for the United States, and not the total, but just considering, hurricane damage, real estate losses, energy costs, water costs, and insurance costs will eventually reach $1,900 billion annually. In addition the US along with all other developed nations will be expected to supply massive aid to offset global warming damage and global warming manifestations in dozens of undeveloped countries.

Australia will also be an aid donator, adding to its own climate change problems. One estimate for Australia's, internal global warming damage bill is that it will likely exceed 1% of GDP or $10 billion per year, but at the very least $8 billion per year, and will be ongoing for probably at least a century or more. Another estimate for Australia is that the damage, just to The Great Barrier Reef, with its consequential fishing and tourism losses would be $37 billion.

Some more accurate examples of a nation's share of responsibility for the $6,600 billion are; the United States 27.13% that's $577 per person per year for ten years. For Australians it's $381 per year for ten years. But we should also understand that; you cannot decrease the wealth of a nation, by paying its farmers to increase the fertility of its soils. For China it's $40 per person per year for ten years. For Japan it's $246 and for India it's just $12.26. Not fixing the problem has the horrifying costs.

When the evidence shows global warming seems now to be proceeding faster than forecast, then the probability of extreme loss of life and property, the strong possibility of the destabilization of national states along with massive and desperate environmental migration is surely an illogical gamble to even consider. It is expected that the heating will soon become irreversible from, among other things, uncontrolled tundra methane releases.

Still, some say we should wait for more evidence. That is not wise. I say -- A global warming skeptic is somebody who believes, that the gun, he is holding at your head, is almost certainly not loaded.

If atmospheric carbon dioxide levels can be returned to preindustrial levels or near those levels and thus global warming be avoided and halted, then we must make the attempt. As well as being immeasurably self serving, it is also our moral, ethical and humanitarian responsibility to do so. Those accumulated greenhouse gasses must be removed and their removal is probably the most urgent necessity we all currently face.

In addition to their removal we must soon cease using fossil carbon material as our prime source of energy. Alternative fuel and energy systems are already available and these by economic necessity must surely include both large scale tropical grown biofuels and nuclear energy.

This complete change away from fossil fuels may take a few decades, but that can be tolerated provided we accomplish the removal of our current excesses of atmospheric carbon dioxide quickly and efficiently.

Why are we not doing it now? Sadly, all too often, the obvious is only obvious in hindsight. And of course some organizations, most notably agro-chemical companies, argue that soil carbon sequestration cannot be done, will not work, or will never be sufficiently effective. That opinion is possibly, biased as the petro and agro chemical industries are second only to the fuel transport industries in the world use of oil.

If the agrochemical industries are right in claiming that enhancing the fertility of the world's soils won't work, it means that governments would pay out nothing. There would be no costs. Costs occur only if it works. And if it does work, if it is as successful as indications show it probably will be, then we totally beat global warming, and chaotic climate change ends forever.

  HOW WE MAKE IT HAPPEN

To end global warming we pay to our farmers a remuneration of $10 minimum per tonne for the carbon dioxide they remove from the air by converting it into soil organic matter.

On a land holder's nominated area a program would commence and run until the nation's historic carbon dioxide accumulations have been sequestrated - probably less than fifteen years. Alternatively an individual program should run for a minimum of ten years.

Trial areas and test depth would be nominated and delineated by the land owner. Depth would be not less than 300mm or 12 inches. Carbon levels would be checked at least biannually.

Initial test hole locations would be determined randomly and, as a recommendation, be at a distance not greater than 10% of the distance from the geometric centre of each nominated area. Subsequence test would then be located at a random distance, and in a random direction from previous tests.

Prior to carbon content testing, all fibrous material, specifically plant and animal material not yet decomposed would be removed by screening.

Where disputes occur the underlying principal must be that the objective is the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Remuneration would be determined by a test measuring the carbon content of the soil at the pre-nominated depth then calculating the carbon dioxide equivalent per hectare, (or per acre), increase from the previous test.

Remuneration to participating land holders would preferably be in the form of tax credits otherwise in the form of a tax exempt payment, as a taxable deduction, or as a direct payment to be classified as taxable income. But whatever the nature or the reward it's essential it be extremely attractive to the land holder.

It is a worthwhile consideration for a higher remuneration to be paid, such as $50 per tonne for a period of say five years. This would be to significantly encourage wide spread initial participation in the program. Such a start up incentive would be equitable and just, for those first participants will be the ones experimenting and developing the best, most economical and most viable systems to end world global warming for all of us.

"We must all recognize that it's impossible to stop global warming if we continue to burn oil, gas and coal. So we stop doing it. Simultaneously we stop our massive use of soil-destroying agricultural chemicals.

Then and only then does everything become easy."

We remove the accumulated excess carbon dioxide from the air by using agriculture to sequester it into creating fertile soil. That's cost free. It's just farming differently.
We stop using coal, oil and gas as our prime source of power. We switch to nuclear energy for power and biodiesel for transport. That's an equal coast change over. Systems such as wind, sunshine, hydrogen, tidal, hot rocks, wave, etc. have huge problems and huge costs. And we are running out of time real fast.

This is a pro bono. site. Update 26 September 2009

While ever public opinion can be directed to a plethora of emotive and marketable environmental side issues, while ever public opinion can be kept confused, unsure and cynical of factual evidence on global warming issues, governments and legislators, who survive by following public opinion, won’t act wisely and responsibly in conflict with that perceived public opinion.

I argue and maintain that ending global warming and halting climate change is not a technically, and nor is it a financially problem.  Ending global warming and halting our catastrophic climate changes is an advertising and public relations exercise. It's an image building, public relations war. But it is a war ultimately as lethal as any conventional war, wars that are structured on bombs and bullets and starvation and human fatalities. That is the essence of the war we are embroiled in. And it's a war you and I can't afford to lose.

There is a growing conviction that a tipping point will be reached within, possibly the next decade, when chaotic climate change becomes irreversible and absolutely beyond all human control. The fossil fuel countries and corporations will have become totally and permanently victorious. Permanently, for when global warming becomes irreversible, arguments for abandoning the use of fossil fuels for energy become hypothetical, and philosophical, and almost meaningless. There will be no lifeboats on this Titanic, we call Earth.

But on the bright side, maybe the PR gurus

"Can't fool all of the people all of the time"

(If you don't recommend this site for others to view then the oil gurus and the fossil carbon gurus will win. There will be no second chance)

Fundamentally, we make a couple of quick, inexpensive switches to our energy systems. And we start eating better and more nutritious food and we win; win; win, hands down. And we save money.

All the ethanol and biodiesel can be grown using organic type agriculture with absolutely insignificant chemical use. It is a total lie - a piece of PR disinformation - to suggest that biofuels require fossil fuels for their production.

BIOFUEL to fuel all the AMERICAS

On the square paddock shown in South America we could grow enough sugarcane and palm oil to power every vehicle in all the Americas. And it would be much cheaper than what we do now.

Currently Brazil uses the equivalent of a 175 km (108 miles) square sugarcane paddock. The very tiny green spot on the right, to produce annually some 18 billion litres of ethanol. That's enough to run seven million cars on pure ethanol for the year. And please note that today Brazilian rain forests take up 100 times as much land as Brazilian sugarcane farms. So there is a lot of land available to solve the global warming problem. Sugarcane production currently uses one third of one percent of Brazil's total land area.

SOIL CARBON SEQUESTERATION The now depleted mid-US prairie soils can rapidly be returned to the fertility and depth shown in this early photo. (From the papers of late Professor William A. Albrecht. University of Missouri College of Agriculture, and courtesy of Chuck Walters, Jr.)

Chapter 10. THE SABOTARGING OF NUCLEAR ENERGY, especially the second half of that chapter spells out the nuclear energy public relations story and the reason why we are constantly sold the concept that nuclear power is somehow a problems. But even worse, it is portrayed as a problem far worse than fossil fuels and their consequential alteration to the heat and optical characteristics of our total atmosphere and the devastating consequences we are beginning to experience across the planet.

FUEL EUROPE

On the paddock shown in tropical Africa we could produce enough biofuels to supply all of Europe. If that paddock was extended east to the coast it could grow the rest of the biofuels to allow us to close down every oil well in the world. It is no wonder their marketing people are so insistent that we must “protect the tropical rain forests”.

FUEL AUSTRALIA

Australia's total requirements for transport fuels could be grown in that tiny area in North Queensland. A bigger paddock and it would need to export fuel.

Chapter 5 SOIL FORMATION CAN HALT GLOBAL WARMING contains the assessments for quantities of soil required to restore atmospheric carbon dioxide levels to below the magic “two nines” that's 299 ppm. It also comers the simple basic chemistry involved in the conversion of CO2 into soil humus.

Chapter 8 describes practical techniques for rapid and profitable soil fertility building for grasslands and crop lands.

THIS IS HOW WE TOTALLY FIX GLOBAL WARMING
we go CHEMICALLY FREE AGRICULTURE

Soil carbon sequestration will bring the atmosphere right back to normal. Fertile soil is weathered, decomposed, geological material containing large quantities of organic matter, such as humus. These materials are made of carbon. Every bit of that carbon was once atmospheric carbon dioxide. So to remove the excess carbon dioxide from the air we simply manufacture fertile soil. We get our farmers to convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into carbon rich soil humus. Organic type farming does this. And so do grassland cell grazing techniques. No magic is involved.

Since the 1950s Allan Yeomans has been deeply involved in techniques for the rapid and economical enhancement of soil fertility. He combined this knowledge with his later studies in metrology and conceived the then totally new concept of using soil to eliminate global warming. His papers and lectures on his concept in the late 1980s and early 1990s both in Australia and the United States sparked a world interest in the interrelationship between soil fertility levels and atmospheric carbon dioxide.

As a result many now recognize soil as being an integral part of the solution to global warming.

"Raise soil organic matter by one tenth of one percentage point a year, and we peg CO2 levels as of today. Raise them by 1.6% points and we get totally back to normal. Global warming is then finished. Go nuclear and go biofuels, and it stays finished." Allan Yeomans. Asilomar Conference. Monterey Ca. 1990

Organic food producers create fertile soil easily. All farmers can. And they will if we ensure they are rewarded for so doing. In doing so there will be a massive reduction in the use of the agricultural chemicals we pour on, spray on and inject into our farm and grazing lands every year. The petrochemical industries naturally see such actions as a huge threat to their viability, and dream up arguments to counter those threats.

We must go for chemically free, organic type farming.

we go NUCLEAR

All dangers are relative, so even in a hugely biased and bigoted comparison with coal and gas generated energy, nuclear energy is ridiculously safe.

France is 100% nuclear plus 15% hydro, so it exports the excess carbon-free power to Spain, and makes a good profit doing so. Other EU countries complain bitterly that French nuclear power is just too competitive.

If France also switched to biofuels, like Brazil, it would be the first Western affluent country on the planet with zero anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

Then we all do the same and global warming with its dangerous and chaotic weather effects would stop.

People are constantly being conditioned to believe that coal, and gas, and oil, are not really that hazardous, and are somehow actually safer than nuclear energy. Not true. Take a worst case scenario; A terrorist could cause more mischief and kill more people if got loose in a major city oil and gas terminal than he could ever do if he got into a nuclear power station.

If the CO2 is allowed to be dumped freely into the air, (as it is now and as it will be for the foreseeable future)  then a coal fired power station, conveniently close to an open cut coal mine, can produce the cheapest electricity. Compared to that, nuclear electricity is only marginally dearer, and that's with everything included, waste disposal, decommissioning, mining, the lot.  Only hydro can be cheaper, but most of the good and inexpensive sites are already utilized.

Electricity from gas and oil is two or three times coal and nuclear prices. Wind energy and solar energy are four to over ten times the price of coal and nuclear. Wave and tidal power prices are worse still and on a world scale have insignificant serious generating potential.

Nuclear waste is a tiny problem with dozens of safe and cheap solutions. Nuclear energy is also sustainable energy. Using breeder reactors we have enough, easily mined uranium to last us for 6000 years. And then we have thorium in even bigger quantities to last us another several thousand years.

Like or not, to end global warming we have to go nuclear.

we go BIOFUELS

The biofuels, ethanol and biodiesel are most easily and most economically produced from sugarcane and oil palms. Both grow best in the hot wet tropics where farmers can produce 7,500 litres of ethanol or 4,500 litres of oil from one hectare, every year for ever. That's approximately 900 gallons of ethanol and 500 gallons of diesel. At around US$85 a barrel, biodiesel and sugar based ethanol are way cheaper than petroleum based fuels. But easily manipulated world oil prices in the past have successfully frighten off substantial investment in biofuels. Nations must use tariffs to set minimum petroleum import prices to stop such systematic back stabbing.

The current anti-biofuel campaign concept is to argue that producing biofuels will lower the quantity of food produced in the world, and people will starve. To make this a plausible argument it is necessary to concentrate biofuel thinking and production onto grain crops. It is thus marketing wisdom for the oil industry and their supporters to quietly promote grain subsidies to farmers and grain/ethanol subsidies to producers.

To them it's the lesser of two evils, for sugarcane is by far the best plant in the world for ethanol production. With sugar production you harvest the plant's sap. It tastes sweet but has no nutritional value. Grains are seeds and are full of nutrients and contain minerals extracted from the soil and so many of us humans live, almost entirely on seeds. That creates a nice PR scenario. There are no minerals in sugar. It's made from atmospheric carbon dioxide, sunlight and rain. The oil sheiks and oil barons are terrified of Citizen Cane.

At around US$55 a barrel, biodiesel and sugar based ethanol are cheaper than petroleum based fuels. But easily manipulated world oil prices have successfully frighten off substantial investment in biofuels. Nations must use tariffs to set minimum petroleum import prices to stop such back stabbing. That will make it happen. Their new campaign is biofuels starve all the children. And you can't grow biofuels without lots of petrolium fuels to drive the tractors. That's rubbish.

When you mix a vegetable oil with ethanol and with a small quantity of a suitable catalyst they chemically combine to form biodiesel and glycerin (glycerol). You can do it at home. Currently the best and cheapest vegetable oil comes from the tropical palm oil tree (Elaeis guineensis). It's now the most common oil palm. There are virtually no nutritious soil minerals in palm oil. In that it's just like sugar.

Both sugarcane and the oil palm grow best in tropical rain forest lands. So for some save the rain forest is a very logical cause, to create and promote. However it is now conceded by biologists and chemists that tropical rain forests are neither an active carbon sink nor a net producer of oxygen. It was all just marketing. Biodiversity thus now becomes the prime marketing image. (Cynical maybe? But maybe we need to be.)

A massive switch to biofuels has to happen.

Do those three things and we beat global warming forever.

Do all three and we beat global warming for ever.
This is not promoting going back to some Kyoto nominated, already inflated, 1990s carbon dioxide levels. Cars were actually bigger than they are today.
And we are not talking about living in caves, and riding bicycles.
This is not about just slowing down our current headlong charge to self-destruction.
This is about immediately pegging carbon dioxide levels at 380 ppm and then systematically reducing them to safe pre-industrial levels
This is about increasing our standard of living, increasing our comfort, our health and our well being, and increasing the number and quality of our possessions. And similtanious ending all climate change.

LET'S BE PRACTICAL

This is not about going back to some Kyoto nominated, already inflated, 1990s carbon dioxide levels. Cars were actually bigger than they are today.

Nor are we advocating some new 2009 placebo to placate us with more Harry Potter answers.

Nor are we talking about living in caves, and riding bicycles to the shopping center in the rain.

Nor is this about merely slowing down our current headlong charge to self-destruction.  This is about immediately pegging carbon dioxide levels at the current 380 ppm (parts per million) and then systematically reducing them to below 299 ppm which is close enough to safe pre-industrial levels. This is about increasing our standard of living, increasing our comfort, our health and our well being, and increasing the number and quality of our possessions. And this is about simultaneously shipping our fuel money to wet tropical Third World countries that will appreciate it, and giving them a chance to grow to be as affluent as their highest aspirations. We can end global warming, absolutely halt climate change and it really won't really cost us a red cent.

This is all about us doing something right now that nobody else in this day and age seems to think is remotely possible. This is also about our very survival.

That is the mission, and we're fast running out of time.

This is about you and I doing something that nobody else seems to think is possible.

And you better believe it. We don't have much time left.

MANIPULATING PUBLIC OPINION

From solar energy, from wind, from wave and tidal energy, the fossil fuel industries see no clear and present danger to their highly prosperous existence. And certainly not from hot rocks or from exotic hydrogen systems.

So these concepts are willingly encouraged, fostered and supported. It's very clever PR image building

The fossil fuel people totally understand that it's impossible to stop global warming while ever the world continues to burn oil, gas and coal, so they are worried. Their business is threatened. Therefore they implement strategies and PR programs to guarantee they keep selling their fossil fuels. The tobacco industry has been and still is their well studied role model.  It's all a matter of images and perceptions. Manufactured confusion and systematic disinformation promulgated with money and editorial influence is incredible effective. And inevitably most of us do end up believing  just what the PR people want us to believe.

.They fully appreciate that only nuclear energy for power and tropical grown biofuels for transport can end their lucrative but damaging reign. All such threats they counter.

The measure or their success is that now most people sincerely believe that nuclear energy has serious and unsolved safety and waste disposal problems. We are also conditioned to believe, and do believe, that weapons proliferation is dependent on, and results from, simply owning and operating nuclear power stations. Whereas history shows the weapons, if they happen, come first and making them is today effectively outside any extra-national direct control.

The public relations conditioning also has us believing that tropical rain forests somehow assist in mitigating global warming. It's a marketing fiction. It's simply not true. Also as climate change hits, the highly publicized and hugely promoted biodiversity issues become pointless. The wet forests just continue to dry out and burn along with their biodiversity.

Grow biofuel plants on half that land and we can end petroleum fuel use worldwide, and keep the majority of that biodiversity, so vociferously claimed to be, under threat.

The book describes how we can totally stop Global Warming with its resultant cancerous climate change and restore atmospheric greenhouse gas levels to near pre-industrial level and fix the mess. It shows how this can be done quickly and at negligible costs. It shows how normal weather and climate patterns throughout the world can be reestablished. It describes the only sensible and practical options we have left before catastrophic global temperature rises become utterly irreversible.

Subject... Ending Climate Change

...Hi...

.I've had a good look at www.yeomansplow.com.au and what they say needs to be seriously considered. They argue that it is completely feasible and surprisingly economical to totally stop climate change and end global warming. They also argue, quite reasonably that the oil, coal and gas industries require global warming to continue. And for those industries it is clever, astute and essential to use their huge advertising allocations to deliberately and systematically influence people, organizations and governments to suit their aims. But the site says we can beat them.

Have a good look your self. If you think it makes sense, then you email this message on. Send it to whomever you consider might like to further their understanding and appreciation of the risks and "clear and eminent dangers" we face with global warming. The site also argues that with no significant money chest, emails like this are one of our very few essential counters.
