Regular deep working with a Yeomans Keyline Plow is absolutely necessary in every type of soil that's cultivated and farmed. The subsoiling operation is necessary as it allows easy penetration of both air and water into the earth. Subsoiling is wise and profitable when either water or air is in short supply.
When you're subsoiling you're probably operating regularly at depths greater than any previous cultivation on that land. So, in essence the depth where the subsoiler is operating is virgin country.
And in such conditions point wear can be considerable.
Of course it would be nice to have a point that never wore out and a point that was available at minimum cost.
So we dreamed up the Magic Merlin Point. It's to get as close to that ideal as possible.
We fitted the very leading edge – the point that gets the hardest abuse – with a heavy tungsten carbide tile. For extra safety the tile is fitted in a recess that takes the heavy forward loads and this massively reduces the stresses in the softer metal alloys that normally hold tungsten carbide pieces in place.
Then we fitted two more tungsten carbide pieces on the leading edge of the vertical Splitter Fin. These are also supported against forward loads impacts. The vertical Splitter Fin is actually essential to initiate vertical shattering in the soil. In addition, the Splitter Fin reduces horsepower requirements.
Then we made the side fins larger than on the current Wombat Point so as to increase their active life. But the vertical fin is really the critical fin. Thr fins wear first but the Merlin keeps working just fine.
During cultivating and deep working, the dirt is not looking at the main body of the Merlin Point. The dirt is looking at the Rabbit and the Top Hat. It's these items that take the wear. But both the Rabbit and the Top Hat are cheap and easy to replace and they cannot fall off, even in the worst and roughest of conditions.
To assemble you put the Top Hat in diagonally from underneath, give it a quarter twist, lay it back and let it slip into place. Then, also from underneath you put the Rabbit in its hole, and simultaneously drop the lock pin (we call a Wand) into place in the Rabbit's nose.
You can assemble and disassemble the pieces in your hands. But as soon as you mount it on the shank, it self-locks and is impossible to disassemble without loosening the point, or taking the point completely off the shank.
It is magical.
The Merlin Point can be held on to the main body of the shank in two different ways. You can poke a piece of 6mm or quarter inch round rod through the locking hole and bend it back with a couple of hammer hits. Or secondly; the Merlin Point and its assembly can be held on with a bolt, either half inch or five-eight. For this you need to buy the little Bridge Lock piece. The Bridge Lock grabs the Merlin Point and the bolt pulls it back onto the shank. To replace Rabbits or Top Hats you simply loosen this bolt, a few turns – you don't have to fully undo it. The whole thing then disassembles. It's simple, cheap and real easy.
We all know deep working points can never last forever, but with this new Merlin Point we've done our very best to solve your subsoiling, point wear, problems.
